What motivates us to initiate this project
We believe that more democratic and social alternative economic models are possible. However, the implementation of such systems in a near future is rather unlikely to happen. Hence, our conviction is that changes can and have to happen within the actual economic system.
Such changes are achievable by using the biggest instrument of all driving this system: the power of consumption.
Through consumption, each one of us dictates to a certain extent which picture the global marketplace assumes. Unfortunately, consumer choices are mediated by values which have little or no relation with the real background of products. The rapid and constant evolution of the world markets, combined with insufficient divulging mechanism, makes it difficult for the consumer to stay informed. This lack of knowledge leads ultimately to a deficit of critical consumption awareness.
The big challenge is thus to increase the populations perspective regarding this subject. Sensitizing people in this context means to convince them that behind 'simple' products are whole human and technological production chains and, in many cases, the respective unethical implications. Most importantly, consumers should become aware that they have the power to change things by modifying their habits.
Our impression is that the political will to support such processes is rather moderate. Amongst others, due to a significant dependence from the interests of multinational corporations. It is hence the role of non-governmental and academic institutions, as well as of individuals to carry out this task.
The Critical Globalization Atlas is our contribution to support these actors in their quest. As a simple to handle and centralized information platform, it will provide a new and effective divulging tool for those in possession of relevant information.
We are sure that the development of the Critical Globalization Atlas represents a milestone in manufacturing a new global consumption awareness.
